Australian palliative care nurse and author Bronnie Ware asked her dying patients to tell her their biggest life regrets. They were: living their life according to others’ expectations; not having the courage to be themselves; hiding their true feelings and working too hard amassing money and possessions. Essentially her patients were saying, ‘I wish I had lived a more authentic life.’
There is something deeply appealing about being myself, whatever my circumstances or level of approval. So I find it incredibly releasing to know that God is in the process of making me far more authentically me than I ever was before. This is part of God’s salvation process. I am not there yet, but it is a freedom to be losing my old defences and pretence.
What one thing can you do today to become more authentically and wonderfully you?
