"Be yourself! Everyone else is taken," said Oscar Wilde
The apostle Paul says in Romans:
Let’s just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren’t.
I once attended a stand-up comedy workshop. To begin with I tried to create a comedy persona to hide behind. Anyone but the real me. Things did not go well, so the The Comedian leading the workshop suggested, ‘Just be yourself, Sean! It’s far easier. Let the audience hear your humour, not someone else’s.’ He was right, and I performed far better on stage as a result.
Pretending places enormous psychological stress on us. Long term it is much simpler to remove our masks and be ourselves.
